Our research team

The Out Of The Comb research team at the Laboratory of Sericulture and Apiculture of the Agricultural University of Athens consists of Assistant Professor Georgios Goras and doctoral candidates Eirini Kontoe, Stavrianna Sofrona and Filippa Griva. Other researchers and collaborators join the team according to the study and research topic.

The team focuses on the scientific study of honey bees, with an emphasis on field trials that can provide reliable approaches to the issues facing modern beekeeping.

Combining knowledge of honey bee physiology and behaviour with an innovative, outside-the-box approach, the team draws inspiration from queen rearing: just as transferring a larva out of the comb and into a queen cell allows it to develop into a queen that shapes the colony’s future, scientific innovation can transform an entire sector.

Research

The Out Of The Comb research team studies the honey bee (Apis mellifera) and its populations, both in the field and in the laboratory.

The honey bee (Apis mellifera) is one of the most valuable insects for the environment and humanity. It performs the vital function of pollination in both natural and agricultural ecosystems, while producing a wide range of products that reach consumers through beekeepers and their work.

In recent decades, honey bees have faced multiple challenges that threaten their populations and directly affect the beekeeping sector. Shortages of natural food, increasingly abrupt and rapid temperature changes, the risk of disease spreading and attacks by beekeeping pests compel beekeepers to turn to intensive management techniques and inputs of questionable quality. In the long term, these practices may adversely affect colony resilience, productivity and sustainability.
